In summary, it's as if when the user is explicitly disconnected by the client, the server takes one off the number of connections for a user, but if the server removes the connection itself, it doesn't take one off the number of connections. I get the same behaviour when I allow the users to timeout. I've stopped and started the server and it doesn't seem to make a difference until I change the number of allowed connections for the user. I've done an experiment using FileZilla client and found that if I limit the number of connections a particular user can make to 10, I can connect 10 times and, if I specifically disconnect using FileZilla I can connect again 10 times, but if I use the console to kick the connections (kicked by administrator) then after that I can only seem to open a single connection. That in itself isn't a problem but if it happens all night, eventually it stops other people from using the server because there are no free connections available. They don't appear to be specifically disconnecting (despite me asking three times for them to change the scripts) so the connections just eventually timeout and disconnect.
